Showery Rain Pushes North

Added : 4 hours ago

Showery Rain Pushes North

The frontal system that has acted as the boundary between the very warm air to the southeast and the cooler, fresher air in the north and west is still lying across central parts of the country today and is set to reinvigorate as an increasingly unstable atmosphere brings the risk of some showers or thunderstorms breaking out although they will be very hit and miss.

It is a rather cloudy start to the day across much of the UK with the best of the early bright or sunny spells coming across Scotland and Northern Ireland and in these areas it will be a mainly dry day some sunny spells although showers will move into western regions later this afternoon. Meanwhile over England and Wales we have showery outbreaks of rain pushing northwards this morning, some of these heavy and thundery over central regions in particular and further showers are likely to push north today turning persistent at times. However not everywhere will see the showers and parts of the southeast will remain bright and very warm, whilst parts of Wales and southwest England will also see plenty of dry weather. Temperatures will again vary widely across the country with highs generally in the range of 18°C to 22°C, but in the brighter southeast values approaching 30°C are again possible.

Further thundery downpours are likely across parts of England this evening and into tonight before slowly moving away to the northeast to leave many parts of the UK dry to end the night with some mist, fog and low cloud forming. However further showers are likely to affect the northwest, some of these heavy. It will be another muggy night in the southeast but temperatures will be fresher the further north and west that you are. Looking ahead to tomorrow and for many places a ridge of high pressure will bring a dry and bright day with some sunny spells, but there will continue to be some showers in the northwest.

Bank Holiday Weather

Added : 1 hours ago

The August Bank Holiday weekend is coming up fast (unless you're in Scotland where you've already had it!) and for many it is the final hurrah of summer before the school holidays end so of course the weather plays a big role in this. This year's August Bank Holiday weather involves good news and, typically, some not so good news.

The not so good news first - there will be some rain or showers around and some of these could turn heavy. The good news - there will also be plenty of dry, bright and pleasantly warm weather around, especially for the Bank Holiday itself. Starting off with Saturday and an area of low pressure to the south of the country will be trying to push its associated weather fronts northwards so outbreaks of rain, perhaps heavy and thundery, will be moving into parts of England and Wales from the south with bright and humid conditions developing in the southeast by the afternoon. Meanwhile for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England a ridge of high pressure means that it should be mostly dry with some sunny spells and just the odd shower.

That low pressure system brings some potentially heavy rain to parts of Wales and northern England on Saturday night before it clears away to the east on Sunday with drier and brighter conditions following on from the west. Once again Scotland and Northern Ireland look set to fare best under a ridge of high pressure with only isolated showers here, but for parts of eastern England it may take much of the day for the last of the cloudy, damp weather to clear.

Into Bank Holiday Monday and the weather looks set to play nicely this year with a ridge of high pressure building in from the southwest bringing plenty of fine and dry weather with temperatures close to or just a touch above normal for much of the country. One or two isolated showers are possible but on the whole it looks set to be a great day for getting out and about and for outdoor events/activities. You can check out the latest forecasts for a whole host of attractions or produce BBQ invites via the links below!

Time To Power Up The Jet

Added : Sunday at 10:05

Ahh, the end of August. It's one of those times of the year where the weather can send Blighty all types of weather. The residual heat is still across Europe which means some warm, perhaps hot weather can still be had. Meanwhile at the North Pole the daylight is now starting to come to an end with less than a month of sunlight left which means that temperatures to the North of us are starting to drop.

It's this contrast in airmasses which drives the weather. After all, if the temperature was the same all around the world then there would be no weather and we would have a very boring job!

For the next month or two we will find this contrast continuing to increase. This in turn will intensify the Polar, Sub tropical and Arctic jet streams as the Earth fights furiously to maintain a balance between hot and cold.

The GFS charts this morning show this battle taking place well. If you select the Freezing Level and nudge the images forwards you'll be able to see it in action. Some heat building across Southern and Eastern areas of the UK this week, but the colder air to the North of us is starting to loom and as a result we see the development of some deep areas of low pressure towards the end of the run. Of course, it probably won't turn out exactly as the models suggested, but just an explanation as to why the weather models start developing deep areas of low pressure at this time of year.
