High pressure will be sitting close to the southeast of the British Isles today bringing a largely fine and settled day for many areas. Further northwest, however, the next frontal system will be approaching from the Atlantic with cloud, rain and strengthening winds gradually moving into western Scotland, western parts of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Thursday morning starts on a chilly note in places with some patchy mist and fog around, but for most it will be a dry and bright start with plenty of sunshine. Cloud will gradually increase across the northwest with outbreaks of rain developing across western Scotland, western Ireland and Northern Ireland during the afternoon, accompanied by freshening southerly winds. Elsewhere it remains dry with some good spells of autumn sunshine although high cloud will turn that sunshine increasingly hazy. Top temperatures will range from 14°C to 18°C in the north and west to highs of 19°C to 23°C towards the south and east, perhaps a touch higher in the London area.

This evening and tonight sees the rain across Scotland and Northern Ireland slowly spreading a little further east and southeast with some heavier bursts possible across western hills before clearer, more showery conditions follow into the far northwest. Many parts of England and Wales stay dry with variable amounts of cloud and a bit more of a breeze helping to hold temperatures up. Friday then sees that band of cloud and rain continuing to only very slowly sink further south-eastwards. Much of the south and east of England will be largely dry, bright and very warm with temperatures up to 27°C in places, but it will be cooler with blustery showers towards the northwest.
