A cold front slipping southwards overnight has helped to stop temperatures from falling too far with predominantly cloudy skies and outbreaks of patchy rain and drizzle heading south. This front clears away today and then the emphasis will be on high pressure building in from the west with many places becoming increasingly settled this weekend although weak fronts will affect the far north.
There's a fair amount of cloud around to start off with this morning with scattered showers affecting many regions. Showers will break out more widely across central and eastern regions of England for a time today, turning locally heavy, but generally the trend by this afternoon will be for many places to turn drier and brighter with increasing amounts of sunshine although some central and south-western districts will hold onto a fair amount of cloud and occasional showers.
Temperatures today will be on the cool side again with values across much of Scotland being held back in single figures, but for brighter parts of southern England with a bit of shelter from the north/northwest wind it will be a touch milder with highs of 13°C or 14°C.
High pressure really begins to take control from tonight with many areas seeing the winds easing and skies clearing which will allow temperatures to drop low enough for some frost, especially for central and northern regions. The breeze will hold temperatures up a touch towards eastern and south-eastern England where the odd shower will blow in and this breeze keeps going in these regions tomorrow but for many areas the weekend will start off on a fine and settled note with lighter winds and some sunny spells but for central and northern Scotland it will become mostly dull and damp.
