The rather unsettled spell of weather continues as we head into the weekend with an area of low pressure bringing wet and breezy conditions to central and southern Britain today before another system sweeps in tomorrow with further heavy showers.

For many regions the weekend is actually starting on a dry note, although it remains cloudy and damp across northeast Scotland and the Northern Isles. However, wet and windy weather is already moving into Ireland, Wales and southwest England and this rain will spread further north and east across much of England and Wales today, turning heavy in places. Somewhat brighter conditions will follow from the southwest later, although it will become increasingly windy across southern areas and further heavy showers are likely to develop.

Meanwhile, much of Scotland and Northern Ireland will have a mainly dry and bright day with sunny spells and just the odd shower, although parts of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland may turn cloudy and damp for a time. Northeast Scotland and the Northern Isles will remain cloudier with a few showers initially, but even here it should gradually brighten up later.

Strong and gusty winds will develop across southern Britain, particularly around English Channel coasts, while top temperatures today will generally range from 18°C to 21°C which isn't far from normal for the end of August despite the rather changeable conditions.

Spells of rain and showers will continue into this evening before gradually clearing eastwards tonight. However, further showers will spread into western and northwestern regions later in the night as the next area of low pressure approaches. This takes us into an increasingly showery day tomorrow, with the showers heaviest and most frequent across northern and western regions. In contrast, parts of southeast England could remain mostly dry and bright for much of the day.
