Thursday was another record-breaking day with a new June maximum temperature record set once more as temperatures soared to 36.7°C at Merryfield in Somerset. However, for the Channel Islands, a new all-time record was set as the mercury hit 39.3°C in Jersey, beating the previous record of 37.9°C which was set in July 2022.
No surprises then that it's another very warm start to the day in many regions and we have some thunderstorms pushing northwards across central and western areas, with some thundery rain also affecting parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The storms and rain will tend to push northwards across Scotland today, with the potential for some torrential downpours, hail and thunder. For much of England, Wales and Ireland, however, it will be another fine day with plenty of hot June sunshine developing once more once any early showers clear. Due to a change in wind direction, it will be central and eastern England that experience the highest temperatures with highs of 33°C to 37°C, and it will feel much hotter along eastern coasts compared with yesterday. It will be cooler towards the north and west, with values more widely in the low to mid-twenties, but under the rain across Scotland it will be cooler still.
Another very warm and humid night follows, with many places remaining fine. A few well-scattered thunderstorms may break out in places, but the wettest weather will tend to be reserved for northern parts of Scotland. Later in the night, some thunderstorms could develop towards the south-east of England, but on the whole it will be a slightly cooler night, especially further west. Tomorrow is set to be another bright and hot day across central and eastern regions of England, but cooler and more showery conditions in the north and west will gradually make their way further east during the course of the weekend.
