Forecasters Warning

Heavy showery rain with associated thunderstorms

Affecting: Much of northern and eastern Britain and parts of Ireland

Valid: 23:00 Thursday 02nd July 2009 - 18:00 Friday 03rd July 2009

This is an update to the Convective Weather Advisory originally issued by Metcheck at 22:00 on Thursday 02nd July 2009, this update issued at 04:42 on Friday 03rd July 2009.

Thunderstorms broke out over northern France yesterday evening and are currently drifting northwards across southeast England and East Anglia.

Meanwhile, outbreaks of showery rain with some thunder have been affecting areas adjacant to the Irish Sea, as well as across the Republic of Ireland and parts of Northern Ireland.

Confidence is moderate for today's forecast, but it looks like these showery bursts of heavy rain with associated thunder will continue to move northwards and eastwards during today, with the risk of heavy and thundery showers across much of northern and eastern Britain today. Torrential downpours can be expected, with over an inch (25mm) of rain possible in some places in a short period of time.

These showers will slowly die away this evening, but probably not clearing the far northeast until tonight.

Please take extra care if you have to travel in these areas in these showers, as driving conditions will become potentially hazardous with a lot of surface water and spray where the showers occur. There is also the risk of localised flash flooding developing in places where torrential rainfall occurs.
