Forecasters Warning

Heavy Snow

Areas Affected: Much of England and Wales at risk

Valid: 09:00 Saturday 04th February - 13:00 Sunday 05th February 2012

This is a Weather Watch issued by Metcheck at 08:47 on Friday 03rd February 2012.

Apart from the risk of some snow showers affecting parts of East Anglia and southeast England on Friday night, bringing a slight covering in places, the main risk of snow this weekend comes during Saturday and Sunday as an Atlantic weather front moves in from the west.

There is some uncertainty over how much snow may fall, but at the moment it looks like outbreaks of rain will move in across western areas of England and Wales during Saturday afternoon and evening, before spreading to central and eastern areas. The rain will turn quickly to snow as it runs into the cold air across the country, and this snow will continue overnight across central areas where the snow may persist for several hours as the front becomes slow moving. There is the potential for up to 5cm of snow to fall in places, with perhaps over 10cm falling in a few isolated spots and over higher ground across northern England. The snow will then tend to peter out and turn to rain during Sunday.

These conditions, along with icy surfaces forming, will lead to hazardous travelling conditions with extra time and care advised.

This Weather Watch will be updated later today.
