Not As Cold
Added : Sun 5 February : 09:50 BST

As promised it has been a cold and snowy night across many areas of England and Wales with a band of snow moving across from the west. This snow has now moved away, leaving a lot of dull and misty weather but there is a fair amount of lying snow around with up to 15cm having fallen in some places overnight, resulting in widespread transport disruption.

So for today and many areas will be generally dry after any remaining snow in the southeast clears. There are some showers around north-western coasts, whilst cloud and rain is moving in across Ireland as another Atlantic weather system arrives. Some brightness will develop as we go through the day with the mist and fog clearing, although sunshine will be generally limited as many places remain rather cold and cloudy with temperatures struggling to climb above freezing in the southeast. Meanwhile the rain over Ireland will slowly edge eastwards but here it will be milder with temperatures close to or just above normal here.

Tonight see's that cloud and rain, generally light in nature, moving further eastwards gradually, but many central and eastern areas will remain dry and frosty with ice and fog forming quite widely. For the start of the new working week it will be generally cloudy with those outbreaks of light rain slipping away to the southeast, Any bright or sunny spells will be limited whilst temperatures will again be near normal in the west but colder the further south and east that you are. Looking further ahead and the colder conditions in the southeast look set to spread back north and west with many areas seeing plenty of settled weather but with sharp overnight frosts and freezing fog patches although the far north and west will remain milder.

 Snow For Many
Added : Sat 4 February : 13:36 BST

It is a cold and wintry day for many as outbreaks of snow move in from the west, potentially bringing accumulations of several centimetres to many regions in the next 12 to 24 hours. However it's not snowing everywhere as somewhat milder conditions in the west bring rain instead of snow and these slightly less cold conditions will spread further south and east with time.

Many northern and western areas are currently cloudy with persistent outbreaks of rain and snow, with most of the snow falling on the leading edge of the rain band as it meets the cold air that's established over Britain. Southern and eastern areas are still dry and fine, but turning increasingly cloudy from the west with snow arriving later today. Some of the snow over England and Wales in particular will become quite heavy and persistent, bringing accumulation with it - please see our Severe Weather Warning for the latest information. Later today clearer conditions will arrive across the far northwest but showers will also follow and some of these could be heavy at times. Temperatures will range quite widely with many central and eastern areas remaining close to or below freezing, whilst western areas will turn milder with western parts of Ireland seeing maximums of 10C.

It will be a cold and snowy night across central and eastern areas of England, with the potential for several centimetres of snow to fall although rain is more likely towards the south coast. Meanwhile clearer conditions will follow into many northern and western areas and as frost develops then widespread icy surfaces are expected to become a major hazard. Looking ahead to Sunday and the last of the sleet and snow will gradually die out over East Anglia and southeast England to leave a dull and cold day. Elsewhere it will be brighter with some sunny spells but showers in the north and west will tend to become heavier and more persistent as we go through the day, with further snow over higher ground.
