Severe Night Frosts
Added : Tue 7 February : 07:22 BST

Pressure is once again rising across most of the country as high pressure to the east and northeast of Britain reasserts its influence. Therefore many places will see a fine and chilly day, although the far west and northwest will be less cold but cloudier with the chance of some light rain at times as Atlantic weather systems try to edge in.

It is a frosty start to the day with many places seeing temperatures having dropped below well below freezing again overnight, but to compensate there is plenty of sunshine around apart from where freezing fog patches can be found. There are some areas of cloud around, notably towards the southeast of England where the odd wintry shower can be expected, and over Ireland and western Scotland. For many it will be a dry day with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud, but it will remain cold, especially towards the southeast where temperatures will struggle to one or two degrees above freezing. Many places will see highs of around 4 or 5C, but across the cloudier west maximums of 8 to 10C are likely.

After dark temperatures will plummet once more with a widespread severe frost forming and temperatures will drop to below -10C in places. Once again the far west and northwest will be cloudier and less cold and some rain may move in later in the night. Wednesday will see little change with many places remaining fine and cold, but Ireland will be generally cloudy with outbreaks of rain moving slowly eastwards. As we move through to the end of the week northern and western areas will turn less cold with some cloud and rain at times whilst southern and eastern areas hold onto the brighter but colder conditions with severe night frosts persisting.

 Not As Cold
Added : Sun 5 February : 09:50 BST

As promised it has been a cold and snowy night across many areas of England and Wales with a band of snow moving across from the west. This snow has now moved away, leaving a lot of dull and misty weather but there is a fair amount of lying snow around with up to 15cm having fallen in some places overnight, resulting in widespread transport disruption.

So for today and many areas will be generally dry after any remaining snow in the southeast clears. There are some showers around north-western coasts, whilst cloud and rain is moving in across Ireland as another Atlantic weather system arrives. Some brightness will develop as we go through the day with the mist and fog clearing, although sunshine will be generally limited as many places remain rather cold and cloudy with temperatures struggling to climb above freezing in the southeast. Meanwhile the rain over Ireland will slowly edge eastwards but here it will be milder with temperatures close to or just above normal here.

Tonight see's that cloud and rain, generally light in nature, moving further eastwards gradually, but many central and eastern areas will remain dry and frosty with ice and fog forming quite widely. For the start of the new working week it will be generally cloudy with those outbreaks of light rain slipping away to the southeast, Any bright or sunny spells will be limited whilst temperatures will again be near normal in the west but colder the further south and east that you are. Looking further ahead and the colder conditions in the southeast look set to spread back north and west with many areas seeing plenty of settled weather but with sharp overnight frosts and freezing fog patches although the far north and west will remain milder.
