Freezing Rain and Snow
Added : Thu 9 February : 08:53 BST

Some potentially dangerous weather is in store for some areas today as a band of rain, sleet and snow sinks southwards. Rain will fall onto frozen surfaces creating a significant ice risk, whilst the snow risk will also increase as we go through the day with some areas seeing some quite notable falls of snow in the next 24 hours or so.

Once again temperatures overnight widely fell below freezing across most of England and Wales, but the cloud and rain across Scotland and Ireland kept it slightly less cold here. There is some freezing rain over southern Scotland this morning, along with some snow over higher ground, and this area of wintry precipitation is now moving south into northern England where some very icy conditions are possible. However as the rain moves further south it will turn increasingly to snow this afternoon, even to lower levels and accumulations are expected - please see our Severe Weather Warning for more details. Meanwhile much of southeast England will remain mostly dry and very cold, whilst drier conditions will move south across Scotland and Northern Ireland where it will be a touch milder.

Tonight will see some potentially heavy snow across central, western and north-western areas of England as well as over central and eastern regions of Wales, and accumulations of up to 15cm are possible in places. Elsewhere it will be a drier night with wintry showers dying out and a widespread frost forming although Scotland and Ireland will again be milder. For Friday and any remaining rain and snow towards the southwest will tend to die away with brighter conditions developing across much of England where it will again be very cold. Once again it will be milder over Scotland and Ireland although often cloudy with some showery rain at times. The weekend remains very cold across England and Wales with milder conditions in the north and west, and even towards the south and east it should turn slightly less cold by Sunday.

 Severe Night Frosts
Added : Tue 7 February : 07:22 BST

Pressure is once again rising across most of the country as high pressure to the east and northeast of Britain reasserts its influence. Therefore many places will see a fine and chilly day, although the far west and northwest will be less cold but cloudier with the chance of some light rain at times as Atlantic weather systems try to edge in.

It is a frosty start to the day with many places seeing temperatures having dropped below well below freezing again overnight, but to compensate there is plenty of sunshine around apart from where freezing fog patches can be found. There are some areas of cloud around, notably towards the southeast of England where the odd wintry shower can be expected, and over Ireland and western Scotland. For many it will be a dry day with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud, but it will remain cold, especially towards the southeast where temperatures will struggle to one or two degrees above freezing. Many places will see highs of around 4 or 5C, but across the cloudier west maximums of 8 to 10C are likely.

After dark temperatures will plummet once more with a widespread severe frost forming and temperatures will drop to below -10C in places. Once again the far west and northwest will be cloudier and less cold and some rain may move in later in the night. Wednesday will see little change with many places remaining fine and cold, but Ireland will be generally cloudy with outbreaks of rain moving slowly eastwards. As we move through to the end of the week northern and western areas will turn less cold with some cloud and rain at times whilst southern and eastern areas hold onto the brighter but colder conditions with severe night frosts persisting.
