Snowy Weekend For Some
Added : Fri 3 February : 09:02 BST

It is another very cold day across much of Britain and Ireland with temperatures once again having dropped well below freezing overnight. However some changes will take place over the weekend as an Atlantic weather system tries to introduce milder conditions. This will mean that a band of rain will move in from the west and as it meets the cold air across the country then it will turn readily to snow in places.

Back to today and apart from some areas of cloud drifting around it is generally fine and quiet with plenty of late winter sunshine around. There are a few isolated snow showers around, but these are few and far between and most places will remain dry. The main exception will come across western Ireland and Scotland where a freshening southerly wind is bringing some less cold conditions along with cloud and some outbreaks of rain or sleet but these will tend to die out during the day. Temperatures will struggle again today, barely climbing above freezing in many areas before falling away quickly later this afternoon.

Another widespread and severe frost will form widely overnight as many places remain fine and clear. A few snow showers may affect coastal parts of East Anglia and Kent for a time, whilst cloudier skies over Ireland and western Scotland will keep it less cold here as some rain moves in from the west. For the weekend and it's a complicated picture as that cloud and rain in the west moves further east. As it runs into the cold air then the rain is likely to turn to snow, especially over inland areas of Scotland, England and Wales later on Saturday and into Sunday. There is the potential for up to 5cm of snow to fall in places, and perhaps more over higher ground, but exact details are still difficult to determine.  Remaining Very Cold
Added : Thu 2 February : 10:35 BST

The generally cold and settled conditions continue across Britain and Ireland today with sharp overnight frosts but sunny skies during the day. Not a lot will change in the next day or so, but a few snow showers will affect eastern coasts whilst the north and west will begin to turn cloudier and less cold as Atlantic weather systems try to push in.

With light winds and clear skies overnight temperatures dropped well below freezing in many areas. Down towards the southeast a moderate to fresh easterly wind hasn't stopped temperatures falling below zero and here it is feeling bitterly cold in the wind. Despite this it is sunny across many areas with most of the cloud over central and eastern areas from The Wash northwards. There won't be a lot of change today with most places remaining fine and dry, but a few snow showers may affect eastern coasts, perhaps giving a slight covering in places. As expected after such a cold start it will be a cold day with temperatures struggling to climb a degree or two above freezing before falling back quickly after sunset.

Another very cold night is in store with lows of -10C in some western rural regions, and quite widely minimums will be below -5C. Many places will remain fine and clear, but some snow showers will continue to affect eastern coasts, again giving some accumulations in places. For Friday and it is more of the same with a few snow showers in the southeast for a time. Many places will be fine and very cold although cloud and rain, preceded by sleet or snow, will move in across Ireland, tending to weaken as it does so. Looking ahead to the weekend and there is the risk of some snow in places for a time as milder Atlantic conditions try to move in meeting the cold air, but confidence is low on this at the moment.
