The Atlantic returns! It's been a while but we're now at the cusp of a very unsettled spell of weather that will take us up to and through Christmas with deep Atlantic low pressure systems sweeping through bringing some very wet and very windy weather at times. There are signs of high pressure returning again from Boxing Day, especially towards the south and east of the UK, but this is still a fair way off and for now the focus is on the unsettled spell.
For this morning it is a cloudy and damp start for many parts of England with some rain and drizzle pushing eastwards across southern and eastern regions. It will be a brighter start further to the north and west, but heavy showers are affecting Northern Ireland and western Scotland, the showers falling as snow over higher ground but they will even turn wintry to lower levels at times today whilst hail and thunder cannot be ruled out either. Meanwhile another band of showery rain will push eastwards across England and Wales during the day to bring a rather wet end to the day across some southern regions. Temperatures in the south will reach maximums of 8°C to 11°C whilst in the north highs of 3°C to 5°C are likely and it will be feeling much colder in the strong to gale force westerly winds here.
That band of rain will clear away to the east tonight and then for many places clearer and colder conditions will follow but further heavy and wintry showers will continue in the northwest with some significant snow for the highest mountains. These squally wintry showers continue for the north and west tomorrow, turning heavy at times but the further south and east that you come the drier and brighter that it will be. We will then be watching developments closely for Friday as Storm Barbara affects the north of the country.
