An unsettled end to the week is on the cards with low pressure dominating the scene but most of our attention today is concentrated on a secondary low pressure system approaching the south and southwest of the country bringing some potentially very wet and windy weather with it to some areas.
To start with this morning it will be bright in many areas with some sunny spells but blustery showers are affecting many western regions, some of these heavy and falling as snow over northern hills. The showers will tend to ease away this morning as cloud increases from the southwest in advance of outbreaks of rain moving into many southern and south-western parts of England along with Wales, the rain turning heavy and persistent as it slowly pushes northwards towards south-western parts of Scotland and eastern parts of Northern Ireland this afternoon. Elsewhere and it will be drier with the best of any sunshine this afternoon becoming confined to the north and east. Temperatures will be close to normal with highs of 6°C to 10°C, but it will feel colder in the freshening winds, the winds becoming very strong with a risk of gales through the English Channel, but the strongest winds do look like remaining over the Channel Islands and northern France.
The rain continues to push north across Scotland tonight, falling as snow over the mountains, but as skies clear further south it will turn chilly with a risk of some frost and ice forming as temperatures drop close to freezing. Looking towards the start of the weekend and further rain or showers are likely across Scotland and there is the risk that some rain will affect the south and southeast of England for a time, otherwise for many there will be plenty of dry and bright weather around with some sunny spells.
