Cooler and fresher air is now established across the country and temperatures in most areas look set to be around the seasonal average for the next few days with no sign of a quick return to the very warm or hot conditions that many places have seen recently. Winds will be coming in from a westerly quarter for much of the time so it will probably come as no surprise to hear that low pressure will never be too far away from the northwest of Britain and Ireland.
Today sees Atlantic weather fronts making their way slowly south-eastwards across the country courtesy of a rather deep low pressure system sitting just off the northwest of Scotland, this low bringing rather brisk winds to many areas. There will be a lot of cloud around across the country this morning with outbreaks of rain and drizzle pushing south-eastwards across northern parts of England and north Wales, the rain heaviest and most persistent over west-facing hills. As we go through the day that cloud and rain continues to sink south, the rain becoming increasingly light and patchy as it does so with many southern counties of England likely to remain mostly dry and bright for much of the day. Meanwhile brighter conditions will follow into much of the north and west but scattered showers are likely to break out in the far northwest later, these turning locally heavy. Temperatures will be back down to nearer normal values, ranging from the mid-high teens in the north and west to the low twenties in the southeast.
It remains rather cloudy across southern regions tonight with some patchy rain and drizzle in places but elsewhere there will be plenty of dry weather with some clear intervals. Showers will continue to feed into the north and west though, these heavy and persistent at times, especially over western Scotland where it will also be rather windy. As we go into the weekend that low will slowly drift eastwards to the north of Scotland allowing the winds to veer north of west bringing cooler air with them. Some patchy rain will affect the south for a time on Saturday otherwise for most places the main theme of the weather this weekend will be one of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers mainly across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland where they are likely to be heavy and prolonged at times.
