The country is currently split by a slow-moving frontal system that will be making erratic eastwards progress during the next 24 hours or so. This front is currently quite active, bringing some heavy rain at times but it will tend to weaken by the time it reaches the east and southeast of England tonight before eventually clearing away.
It’s a dull and wet start to the day for areas close to the Irish Sea with some heavy and persistent rain around, especially over higher ground, and this rain band will continue to push eastwards today, eventually reaching many central and eastern areas, but for East Anglia and southeast England it is likely to remain dry and bright for much of the day. Meanwhile brighter conditions will follow into the west with many parts of the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland ending up with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers mainly around western coasts. Temperatures in the southeast will end up at around 19°C or 20°C again, but it will be a touch cooler elsewhere, especially under that rain band.
The rain continues to push across eastern parts of England this evening, becoming lighter and more patchy as it does so before clearing away to the east tonight. Clearer spells follow on from the west and this will allow it to turn chilly in many places with perhaps some mist or fog patches forming, but further showery outbreaks of rain will move in across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland later in the night. Friday will then be fine for many eastern regions with some sunny spells, but cloud will tend to increase from the west as that next band of showery rain moves across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland before reaching western parts of England and Wales.
