The country is caught in something of a battleground situation this weekend as we get stuck between a large area of high pressure building out to the northeast and deep low pressure systems out over the Atlantic. The overall synoptic pattern doesn’t look like changing much in the coming days, but with the country often caught in the middle there will be a distinct east/west split in our weather, with western areas seeing the more changeable conditions.
For the start of the weekend we have a weak front over central areas with another frontal system pushing into the west today so the net result is that there is a lot of mist and cloud around this morning across much of the country with some scattered showers around, especially over central regions. There is some brightness around though with some sunny spells, especially in the north and towards the far southeast of England, and as we go through the day many areas will brighten up with sunny spells breaking through. However for much of southern Scotland and northern England it will remain rather cloudy for much of the day. It will also be cloudy out towards the west with outbreaks of rain and drizzle moving into Ireland later on today. In the sunshine temperatures will become pleasantly warm with maximums in the range of 17°C to 21°C.
Cloud and outbreaks of rain and drizzle will continue in the north and west tonight, perhaps making it as far east as western parts of Wales and England, but it will be drier and clearer further east although with winds coming in from a southerly quarter it won’t be a cold night. This east-west split becomes more prominent tomorrow with cloudy skies and spells of rain affecting western regions but for the east it will be drier, brighter and warmer with temperatures in the sunnier areas making the low twenties so feeling rather warm.
