You know, our coders here at Metcheck HQ are a clever bunch, but ask them to bake a birthday cake (just a normal one with icing on top) and the result looked like an omelette with tippex smeared over the top.
The story begins a few weeks ago when a software company approached us and told us about some new stuff they had developed called Dark Thunder. They said it would blow our minds, but at Metcheck we are used to creating stuff which regularly pushes the boundary, regardless, we invited them into the towers to see what they could do.
The software was stunning, and we mean that. Our coders were so impressed that FIVE tubes of Pringles were consumed in the meeting and we knew we could create something special for you guys. The software would split satellite images into different channels. Most people wouldn't get excited about this, but back to second year met degree and we knew that if we combined three channels that we would be able to show you the depth of a cloud. Still not excited? Well, if we know the depth of the cloud and the temperature at the top then we can tell you how heavy any rainfall will be from that cloud. Not just that, but we can tell you if it will be rain, sleet or snow and whether thunder or tornadoes are likely too.
At this point, a SIXTH tube of pringles was opened and we knew we could create a global radar for areas around the world which don't currently have, or can't afford a radar network. Not just that, but we could tell you whether rain, snow, thunder or tornadoes are possible too.
It's not often we create technology which can help the world, but this is one of them. Global radar is now available and it's all thanks to dark thunder, our coder and pringles.
We will be offering this data free of charge to all fairtrade growers in regions not covered by radar, but in the meantime you can now see what's happening around the world thanks to a few bright sparks (and that sixth unfinished tube of pringles).
