A ridge of high pressure will bring a mostly dry and bright day to many parts of the country today however the next Atlantic low will be bringing thickening cloud and freshening winds to the northwest later on and this will mark the start of a period of weather with a distinct northwest/southeast split becoming evident - the southeast becoming bright and warm whilst the northwest remains more unsettled with wind and rain at times.
This morning is dawning bright and chilly in many areas with skies having cleared overnight allowing temperatures to drop back down into single figures with some patchy mist and fog forming. These will soon clear and then for much of the country it will be a dry day with sunny spells. There are some scattered showers across Scotland though, especially across the north and west, and as we go through the day cloud will tend to increase in many regions although most places will remain dry. The exception will be across those northern and western parts of Scotland along with western parts of Ireland where some patchy rain and drizzle will feed in off the Atlantic accompanied by freshening south/south-westerly winds. Top temperatures today will range from around 13°C or 14°C in the north to 17°C or 18°C in the southeast so not too bad for mid-October.
It becomes wet and windy in the northwest tonight with some heavy rain developing at times, especially over west-facing coasts and hills. It will be mainly dry towards the southeast but increasingly cloudy. The cloud and wind will mean that it will be a mild night everywhere with many places starting Friday off with temperatures in the low to mid teens. So a mild or rather warm day tomorrow, especially across southern and eastern regions where some bright or sunny spells are likely, but towards the north and west it will be cloudy and windy with periods of rain at times.
