There’s something of a north-south split in the weather across Britain and Ireland today with northern regions seeing a drier and quieter day of weather thanks to a ridge of high pressure but towards the south frontal systems will be bringing a lot of cloud with them and some rain or drizzle at times. We continue to watch developments closely for the end of the week as the remnants of another tropical system look set to sweep in bringing rain and gales with them.
For this morning it is a bright and chilly start to the day across parts of the north and west and there is even some patchy ground frost and some mist or fog in places where skies have cleared. These will readily clear and then for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England it will be a bright day with some sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud, the thickest of the cloud bringing the odd shower. Meanwhile for the south it is a cloudier but milder start and we have some rain affecting central and southern counties. These southern regions will hold onto a lot of cloud today with further bursts of rain and drizzle at times, but there will be some drier spells too, especially as we go through this afternoon towards the southwest where some sunny spells may develop. Temperatures for many will be back nearer normal for mid-October with highs in the low-mid teens at best but with much lighter winds.
A lot of cloud will linger into tonight and as the winds begin to pick up in the west so outbreaks of rain will move into western regions with some showers breaking out ahead of this. This takes us into a rather cloudy and windy day tomorrow with rain in the west pushing eastwards but northern and eastern regions may well remain dry for much of the day and there could even be some brightness around too.
