The leftovers of yesterday's frontal system will be slowly moving away to the east and northeast today with a small window of drier and brighter weather following on. However hot on its heels is Storm Brian and he will be sweeping in later today and into tomorrow bringing heavy rain and the risk of gales or severe gales, especially towards the south and southwest.
Although it will be a fine and bright start to the day across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland with some sunny spells, for many areas it is another rather cloudy and murky start with scattered showers pushing eastwards. As we go through the day the showers will tend to die out although a few may linger across northern and eastern parts of the UK where it will remain mostly cloudy all day. At the same time, that zone of brighter weather will follow across central and southern parts of England and Wales but for the Republic of Ireland this afternoon will turn wet and windy with outbreaks of rain pushing in from the west, this rain turning heavy at times as it moves into Northern Ireland, Wales and southwest England by this evening. It will be another fairly mild day for the second half of October with top temperatures ranging from 13°C to 16°C and although blustery winds in the south will ease, they will freshen up again in the southwest later.
That band of rain pushes north and east across most parts tonight although the far northeast of Scotland may remain mostly dry until morning. Clearer, more showery conditions will follow the rain band but the main feature will be those winds which will continue to strengthen with gales or severe gales developing towards the southwest where gusts of up to 70 MPH will be possible in exposed spots. This takes us into a very blustery weekend with most places seeing a mixture of sunny spells and blustery showers tomorrow as gales affect the south of the country, these locally severe in exposed locations.
