A rather changeable weather pattern is currently affecting many parts of Britain and Ireland with Atlantic frontal systems pushing eastwards today bringing some wet weather to western coasts and hills in particular, but there will be some drier and brighter conditions developing too, mainly for the far northwest and towards the south and southeast of England.
Although there is some early brightness across the east and northeast of England and Scotland first thing this morning, for many areas it is a rather cloudy start to the day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle pushing in from the west. This cloudy, damp weather makes its way further north and east today, the rain always heaviest and most persistent over the higher regions of western Scotland, northwest England and Wales. By this afternoon we are expecting brighter conditions, albeit with a few scattered showers, to move in across many parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, whilst at the same time southern and south-eastern counties of England will be mainly dry if remaining rather cloudy. Temperatures will reach maximums close to normal in many areas with highs ranging from 13°C to 15°C in the north and 16°C to 18°C in any brightness that develops across the south, however it will be feeling cooler in the brisk south/south-westerly winds that will be quite strong at times in the south.
Showers will tend to become heavier and more frequent in the north tonight, especially across northern and western Scotland where it will also be rather windy. Meanwhile the band of cloud and rain across parts of Wales and northern England will become slow-moving overnight before tending to drift back south-eastwards, weakening as it does so. To the southeast it will remain cloudy and mild with temperatures in double figures, but it will be a touch colder under any clearer spells in the north. Tomorrow sees very little change with that band of thicker cloud and some rain or drizzle slowly sinking south-eastwards across England and Wales marking the boundary between the brighter but cooler and more showery conditions in the north and the milder air in the south and southeast.
