It's a very different start to the day compared to yesterday across many parts of the UK. Whereas yesterday morning was cold and frosty for many, it is much milder this morning with cloudy skies and outbreaks of rain pushing eastwards. That rain is associated with a frontal system and this will clear through today to leave a ridge of high pressure bringing another cold night tonight.
A lot of cloud around this morning then and we have a band of rain, the rain locally quite heavy, pushing eastwards across Scotland, Wales and western parts of England. For central and eastern parts of England it is a mainly dry start with some early brightness in the east, but that band of rain will be moving through as we go through today, although the rain won't reach East Anglia and the far southeast until after dark. Meanwhile clearer conditions now moving in across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will extend across most other regions as we go through the day so all but central and eastern parts of England will see some sunshine developing after the rain clears although scattered showers will feed into western coastal regions. Temperatures will be a touch milder than yesterday with maximums in the range of 9°C to 12°C, the mildest conditions coming ahead of the rain band although the brisk winds will make it feel colder.
The rain becomes confined to East Anglia and southeast England tonight where it will become slow-moving. Elsewhere and although some showers will continue around western coasts, for many areas clearing skies and winds easing mean it will turn cold with a widespread frost forming along with some patches of mist and fog. These will clear tomorrow morning to leave many places with a dry and bright Wednesday with the far southeast brightening up, but wet and windy weather will move into the northwest as we go through the day with some heavy and persistent rain developing across the Scottish mountains.
