A ridge of high pressure is bringing plenty of fine and sunny weather with it today but not for everyone as we still have the remnants of yesterday's frontal system lurking across the southeast of the UK. Not only that, but the next Atlantic frontal system is already on its way so that window of fine weather will become increasingly narrow as that ridge is squeezed out.
Although many parts of Britain and Ireland are starting off fine and cold with a widespread frost having formed overnight, especially for rural areas, for central and eastern parts of England it is cloudy and damp start but temperatures here are milder as a result. That cloud and patchy rain towards the southeast will slowly continue to drift away eastwards today but many parts of East Anglia and southeast England are likely to hold onto the cloud for much of the day. At the same time the sunshine elsewhere will come under threat from thickening cloud moving in from the northwest during the course of the day, that cloud bringing outbreaks of rain and freshening winds across many parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland this afternoon. Temperatures will be close to normal with maximums ranging from 8°C to 11°C, the mildest conditions coming ahead of the rain band although the brisk winds will make it feel colder.
The cloud continues to spread south-eastwards tonight, but clear skies over parts of southern and south-eastern England will lead to some patchy frost forming for a time before the cloud rolls in later. Otherwise many areas will be frost free overnight with that cloud bringing outbreaks of rain and drizzle with it. This takes us into a rather cloudy and damp start tomorrow but brighter conditions with scattered showers will move into much of northern Britain. Southern regions will hold onto a lot of cloud and some patchy rain and drizzle though although here it will be a touch milder.
