Winds across Britain and Ireland have now returned to a milder west/west-south-westerly direction as high pressure slips away to the south allowing Atlantic frontal systems to move in from off the Atlantic. So although it will be turning a bit milder today, there will be a lot of cloud around across many parts of the country with those frontal systems becoming slow-moving across central and southern regions for the next day or two.
This morning starts off milder than it did yesterday but the reason for this is that there is a lot of cloud around in many regions and we have some patchy rain and drizzle affecting central and southern parts of Britain and Ireland courtesy of that frontal system. There are some clearer skies towards Scotland though and here there will be some sunny spells here throughout today although some showers will affect northern and western coasts, heaviest and most frequent towards the far northwest. Meanwhile for many parts of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland it will remain mostly cloudy for much of the day with the risk of some patchy rain and drizzle at times as that front becomes virtually stationary. Despite the cloud it will be a milder day in the south with maximums widely in the range of 10°C to 12°C.
Many areas will hold onto a lot of cloud tonight with some mist and fog patches forming in places. Some patchy rain and drizzle will continue to affect central and southern regions at times, and showers will affect parts of Scotland for a time, but clearer spells in the north later in the night could allow some patchy frost to form. Looking ahead to tomorrow and although high pressure will be close to the south of the country there will continue to be a lot of cloud around with the odd shower, and these cloudier but milder conditions will be pushing northwards across Scotland too.
