High pressure is sitting close to the south of the country today bringing a lot of quiet and benign autumnal weather with it. We still have the remnants of a weather front lying across central and southern regions of Britain and Ireland today, and later on another frontal system will be moving into the northwest of the country bringing freshening winds and some rain with it.
It's a misty and murky start to Wednesday across many parts of England, Wales and Ireland with some locally rather dense fog patches having formed overnight in places.
We also have some patchy rain and drizzle affecting southern and south-western parts of England and Wales and this risk continues today although most places will remain dry if remaining rather cloudy. Meanwhile there are some clearer conditions across northern parts of Britain so there will be some sunny spells around here and these brighter conditions will tend to drift further south during the course of the day as cloud increases and thickens across northern and western Scotland. This cloud, accompanied by freshening south-westerly winds, will then bring outbreaks of rain in across western and north-western Scotland later this afternoon and into the evening. Temperatures for many areas will be close to or just above normal, reaching highs of between 9°C and 12°C.
Many areas will hold onto a lot of cloud tonight with some mist and fog patches forming in places. It will become increasingly wet across Scotland and Northern Ireland with blustery winds, but with all this cloud and wind it won't be a cold night. That band of rain and brisk winds will push south-eastwards tomorrow, the rain becoming lighter and more patchy as it does so. Clearer, colder and more showery conditions will follow in from the northwest, but southeast England may remain dry for much of the day.
