Yep, your brolly is likely to make a few guest appearances as we enter the new year thanks to the Atlantic being in a rather active phase right now. The main reason for this is all down to the colder weather which is currently affecting parts of Canada and North America.
You may also be familiar with the old wives tale of the UK getting the weather which New York has seen a week or so later, but there is no truth in this as any weather which happens three and a half thousand miles away and has to travel across the warmer Atlantic would be so heavily modified at the base that it wouldn't bear any relation at all to the original weather.
That said, we did a discussion a few months back on Rossby Waves and how the slow moving upper troughs and ridges in the Northern Hemisphere slowly migrate Eastwards. It's no surprise therefore that the trough which is across Eastern parts of the USA will slowly migrate across the Atlantic and the UK resides in a rather large upper trough by the end of this week and into the weekend.
But of course, in the USA when you have Northwest winds then they come from the incredibly dry and cold continental Canadian landmass. Ours, comes from near Iceland and is once again heavily modified at the base away from Northwestern parts of the UK.
One thing which we are keeping an eye on though is a low pressure system which heads in towards the end of this week. It's low confidence, but the global models are hinting at this system hanging around across Eastern areas and allow high pressure to build to the North which in turn brings in colder air from the Northeast/East. But, this is still a long way away in weather terms and something which we will keep an eye on in our discussions throughout this coming week.
