Temperatures will be falling away during the next couple of days as we begin to import a colder air mass from the north and northeast. However before you all dash out to stock up on the essentials, we'd like to stress that nothing out of the ordinary for early January is on the cards with drier conditions developing during the weekend as that colder air moves in.
Friday dawns rather cloudy in many regions with some rain and hill snow affecting parts of Scotland. Meanwhile showers are pushing eastwards across Ireland, England and Wales, some of these locally heavy and persistent. There is some drier weather around too, mainly across northern Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland and in these areas there will be some sunny spells this morning. On the whole many places will see a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers today, the showers occasionally heavy with a risk of hail and a rumble or two of thunder, but the band of thicker cloud and patchy rain/hill snow over Scotland will tend to sink a little further southwards as we go through the day. Temperatures will range from a rather chilly 1°C to 4°C to in the north and 5°C to 9°C in the south so it will be colder than yesterday for southern regions.
Scattered showers continue well into tonight across many areas but they will gradually become confined to more central and southern regions as a brisk north-easterly wind brings clearer conditions into the north. It will be cold with a touch of frost forming under any lengthy clearer spells in the south, but a more widespread frost will develop across Scotland. The weekend sees those colder north-easterly winds extending to all parts with the showers slowly becoming confined to the south and east. As pressure rises over the north so there will be increasingly settled conditions developing here but night frosts will become locally very sharp.
