The area of low pressure that may have kept you awake overnight, or awoken you early this morning, is now moving away to the east taking its rain, snow and gales with it to leave much of Britain and Ireland under a chilly and blustery west/north-westerly air stream today with sunny spells and scattered showers dominating. This rather cold and showery theme continues into the weekend but as we head into next week milder air looks set to spread to most areas as pressure rises to our south.
The last of the rain, snow and gales is now clearing central, northern and eastern parts of England and although winds may gust up to 65 MPH around the North Norfolk coast for the next hour or two, the strongest winds are now easing from the west. It will remain blustery today though and those winds will continue to feed in plenty of showers to northern and western coastal regions, with some of these showers spreading further inland at times. The showers will be heavy at times, bringing the risk of hail, sleet and snow in places with further snow accumulations likely over higher regions. It will be another rather cold day with top temperatures generally in the range of 3°C to 7°C, with the milder temperatures across southern regions this morning tending to drop back as we go through the day.
Showers, wintry at times, will continue to feed into northern and western regions tonight with further locally significant accumulations of snow over higher ground but elsewhere clearing skies will lead to a fairly widespread frost forming despite the breeze. This takes us into a bright and cold start to Friday with further wintry showers for the north and west, but for many eastern regions it will be another mainly dry and bright day with plenty of sunshine around.
