Blimey! What a week so far... Snow, blizzards, gales and thundersnow! Surely, the weather must calm down now right? Well, it sort of does and sort of doesn't.
This morning we have the low pressure system (which wasn't named, but the DWD names it as Friederike) moving away into the near continent and causing some significant disruption across airports of the Netherlands thanks to the very strong winds. Behind this system and we are in the "wake" which is basically the colder Polar air which moves in from the Northwest behind the system and brings a smattering of showers to many areas.
Friederike ran in from the West last night with some colder air pooled to the North of the UK (the same colder air which has been parked there for much of the week) and this is the same air which the wake of Friederike taps into and pulls Southeast once again over the next few days.
So, we have a return to Northwesterly winds and this brings the snow showers and colder temperatures back in once again across all parts of the UK throughout today and into tomorrow with further accumulations across parts of Northern Ireland, Western Scotland and Northwest England.
Then we have a system coming in on Sunday which we are watching very closely. Remember, colder air will be dragged in once again from the Northwest today and tomorrow, then we have milder air with a frontal system coming in on Sunday which could produce some significant accumulations of snow for a time as the front runs into the colder air across parts of Northern England and Scotland on Sunday morning and into Sunday afternoon.
Behind this we have a transition to much milder air for a time from the Southwest which will trigger a thaw of much of the fallen snow across Northwestern parts of the UK and that brings another headache in its own right.
So, plenty of weather so far this week and plenty more still to come...
