After the bright sunshine that many regions saw yesterday, it's back to the unsettled weather today as a frontal system pushing eastwards brings some very strong and gusty winds with it along with a spell of rain and / or snow. This slowly clears the east to leave a frosty night tonight but the next Atlantic system is hot on its heels and will be moving in from the west tomorrow.
It's a windy start to the day across many central and eastern parts of the UK with freshening southerly winds ahead of a frontal system that is bringing a band of rain across western parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Irish Sea and down towards Wales and southwest England. The rain is heavy in places and there is also snow falling across higher parts, but also to lower levels in the north where some locally moderate accumulations are possible. That band of rain and snow continues to make its way eastwards today, reaching eastern counties during this afternoon by which time it will begin to turn lighter and more patchy. Brighter conditions with a few wintry showers will then follow on from the west with many western regions seeing a fine end to the day as the showers will mostly be confined towards the northwest. Temperatures will be on the chilly side once again, ranging from 2°C to 5°C for most, feeling colder in the strong winds that will ease later.
A widespread frost forms across much of the country tonight as the rain and hill snow slowly clears the east. Temperatures over the snowfields of Scotland may drop to -10°C but later in the night temperatures will rise in the west as strengthening southerly winds develop ahead of the next band of rain moving into Ireland later in the night. This rain then pushes eastwards tomorrow, heaviest and most persistent in the north and west with snow over higher ground in the north, but milder air will also be moving in from the southwest with temperatures reaching double figures in the southwest.
