It's a cold and bright start to Friday for many parts of the UK and Ireland thanks to a ridge of high pressure, but this ridge will soon be moved out of the way by low pressure approaching from the south and southwest today with its associated weather fronts bringing outbreaks of rain with them, this rain pushing across most areas during the next day or so.
There's some frost and patchy fog in places this morning but these will soon lift and then for most places there will be plenty of dry and brighter weather around and just a few coastal showers, these showers mainly in the north and west. However cloud is already thickening across the far south and southwest of England ahead of outbreaks of rain and drizzle breaking out this morning, the rain turning heavier and more persistent this afternoon as it edges further north, the rain reaching many parts of Ireland, Wales, the south Midlands and southern parts of East Anglia by this evening. Ahead of the rain and in any sunshine it won't feel too bad with temperatures generally in the range of 7°C to 9°C for many, but the mildest temperatures will actually come in the far south and southwest where highs of 12°C are possible in places later on.
A sharp frost will form across under clear skies across Scotland tonight and some patchy mist and fog may form in places too. However, temperatures will tend to pick up from the south later in the night as cloud and breeze increases from the south in advance of that band of rain that will be pushing northwards across much of England, Wales and Ireland but at least in these areas it will be a mild night. Looking ahead to tomorrow and that rain, with some snow over the mountains, will slowly push north across Scotland making for a wet and miserable Saturday. Further south, somewhat drier conditions follow on with much milder air, but further bursts of rain are likely to push northwards from time to time.
