A much better day is in store for many parts of the country today courtesy of a ridge of high pressure that is building in from the south. However, once again this ridge will be a transient feature with the next set of Atlantic weather fronts moving into western regions later on before pushing further eastwards tomorrow.
Many northern and eastern regions of the country are dawning cloudy this morning and there are still a few showery outbreaks of rain lingering on in places. Meanwhile, out to the west and it is a brighter but colder start to the day with some frost and patchy mist or fog in places. Those brighter conditions will extend across most regions today so that by this afternoon most places will be dry with some bright or sunny spells. However, there will still be some variable amounts of cloud drifting around and the thickest of this could still bring the odd scattered shower. Winds will become mainly light, but later on a freshening southerly wind will develop across Ireland, whilst top temperatures will be in the range of 9°C to 13°C for many, feeling pleasant in any sunshine.
Those freshening southerly winds will bring outbreaks of rain across many parts of Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland, the rain tending to turn more persistent during the course of the night. To the east it remains dry with some frost across parts of the north and east although temperatures will tend to lift a touch later in the night as the winds begin to pick up. Wednesday will then become increasingly windy for most with south/south-easterly winds touching gale force in exposed spots and heavy rain affecting much of the west, but for most central eastern districts it should remain mostly dry, bright and potentially rather mild.
