The Easter weekend looms large and unfortunately it is low pressure that is the dominating feature of the weather across many parts of the country, this low meandering around close to the south and southwest of the country for the next couple of days bringing showers or longer spells of rain with it, especially towards more southern regions.
Although many areas are starting Thursday off on a bright and chilly note with some frost in places, we have an area of cloud and rain affecting north-eastern parts of Scotland and the Northern Isles and this is likely to continue through the day, the rain falling as snow over higher ground. Meanwhile there is more in the way of cloud across southern and south-western regions of Ireland, England and Wales with showers pushing up from the south and southwest, the showers heavy in places. These showers will continue to push further north and eastwards today bringing some locally heavy downpours with a risk of hail and a rumble or two of thunder, but they will be hit and miss affairs with some pleases staying dry. The best of the drier and brighter weather today will come across parts of northern and eastern England, but especially over Scotland away from the northeast Top temperatures will range from 5°C to 9°C so it will be another rather chilly day for the end of March.
Most places will see variable amounts of cloud tonight with scattered showers continuing to push northwards whilst that cloud and rain in the northeast will edge south-westwards, turning to sleet and snow over higher parts. Where skies to clear it will turn chilly with some patchy frost and fog. As we head into Good Friday easterly winds develop in many areas bringing a lot of cool and cloudy weather with some showery rain at times which may turn to snow over higher ground. However, a band of heavier and more persistent rain looks like affecting southern regions.
