A rather deep area of low pressure passing close to northwest Scotland today will send its associated cold front south-eastwards across the country although it will weaken by the time it gets to southeast England. Attention then turns to Tropical Storm Helene close to the Azores as her remnants head our way for the first part of the working week bringing strong winds and heavy rain for some along with some warm air.
Back to this morning and the day starts off with a band of rain extending from the Northern Isles down across much of Scotland, into northwest England and west Wales, the rain locally quite heavy and persistent. To the south and east it is a dry and bright start whilst brighter skies are moving in across many parts of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. As we head on through the day that band of rain will continue to sink south-eastwards, reaching southwest England, south Wales, the Midlands and parts of eastern England but the rain will become increasingly light and patchy. To the southeast it will remain bright and warm, whilst conditions will brighten up across much of Scotland and northern England although a few showers will feed into parts of northern and western Scotland. Today's top temperatures will be similar to those of yesterday's, ranging from 13°C to 16°C in the north and 18°C to 21°C in the south but it will be rather breezy.
A few showers will continue around northern and western coasts tonight otherwise for many places it will be a dry night with some clear spells and variable amounts of cloud. Under the clearest skies it will turn rather cool, but on the whole minimums will be around 9°C to 12°C. The new working week will then start off on a bright note for many but all eyes will be on developments towards the southwest as increasingly wet and windy weather associated with the remnants of Helene arrive later in the day.
