Low pressure becomes the dominant feature of the weather across Britain and Ireland during the next 24 hours or so as an active frontal system pushes eastwards bringing strong winds and heavy rain with it. This low then hangs around throughout the weekend meaning further showers or longer spells of rain are expected in many areas, particularly towards the south and west.
South/south-easterly winds are already picking up in many areas this morning and they will continue to strengthen today with gales or severe gales developing around exposed coasts and hills in the south and west today where gusts of 60 MPH will become possible at times bringing some hazardous travelling conditions. It is a bright start for many, especially across central and eastern regions, but showery rain is continuing to affect parts of southwest England, Wales and up into parts of Scotland although this will tend to die out during the morning. Meanwhile a band of rain is now moving into western Ireland and this rain moves steadily eastwards today, turning heavy and persistent at times, the rain reaching many western regions by this evening. Further to the east it will stay mainly dry but increasingly cloudy and windy and one or two showers may break out ahead of the main rain band. With all this weather activity, temperatures will be somewhat academic but will actually be on the mild side with maximums in the range of 10°C to 14°C, the highest values coming towards the south.
That wind and rain will push eastwards across the rest of the country tonight, clearing all but the extreme east and northeast by the end of the night. Clearer conditions will then follow on from the west along with showers around windward coasts although the strongest winds will ease once the rain has cleared through. The weekend is then set to be bright and breezy in many areas with a mixture of sunny spells and showers, most of the showers towards the south and west with some areas towards the north and east escaping with plenty of dry weather.
