The synoptic pattern that has prevailed for much of the week is still in place today, that is we have high pressure to the north of the country and an area of low pressure meandering around close to the southwest. This pattern continues into the weekend too, and we're keeping an eye on that low to the southwest as this could bring some very wet weather to south-western regions tonight and tomorrow.
Back to this morning and many places are starting off frost free this morning thanks to a lot of cloud and mist. The cloud is bringing scattered showers to northern and eastern regions of the UK, particularly to parts of Scotland. Showers are also threatening the far southwest of England and Ireland, and these are quite heavy with a risk of hail and thunder. Little change is expected today with many places remaining rather cloudy and only some limited bright or sunny spells developing, the best chance of these coming across parts of northern England. Temperatures will generally be a touch less cold than the last couple of days with maximums ranging from 6°C to 9°C, but the far southwest will again see highs of 11°C or 12°C.
Showers will continue towards the north and east tonight, but for many other areas it will be dry with some clear spells developing and this could allow for some patchy frost and fog to form. However, towards the southwest of England heavy and thundery outbreaks of rain are expected to develop and this is something we're keeping a close eye on as this thundery rain continues into tomorrow bringing the risk of some localised flooding with some spots potentially seeing up to 2 inches of rain. Elsewhere, and although some showers will continue to affect eastern coasts, there will be a fair amount of dry weather around with variable amounts of cloud and some sunny spells.
