Low pressure is back in charge of the weather across many parts of Britain and Ireland today, with the exception of the far north of Scotland, but over the next couple of days more active Atlantic low pressure systems look set to bring wetter and potentially very windy weather to all areas.
It’s a cold and frosty start to the day across many parts of Scotland and for much of central and northern Scotland it will remain fine and cold again today with temperatures struggling to climb above freezing in places. Meanwhile, for many parts of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland it is a cloudier but milder morning with outbreaks of rain pushing north and east, the rain arriving across southern parts of Scotland this morning. Some of the rain is quite heavy in places, and is falling as snow over higher parts of the Pennines and Southern Uplands too. Further spells of rain will affect many areas throughout the day and although there will be some drier intervals at times too, a more sustained clearance to drier and brighter conditions will develop across Ireland this morning before extending into other western regions this afternoon. Despite the cloud and brisk winds in the south it will be milder here with top temperatures of 11°C to 14°C.
The last of the rain will clear central and eastern regions this evening with many places becoming dry for a time with some mist and fog patches forming in some areas. However, more rain and freshening winds will arrive across many northern and western regions during the night so, after an early frost in the northeast, temperatures will tend to hold up well in many areas. This takes us into a rather windy and cloudy Thursday with further spells of rain pushing eastwards across many parts of the country, but temperatures will be on the mild side.
