Low pressure continues to dominate the weather across many parts of Britain and Ireland today with one frontal system clearing away to the east only to be replaced by another one coming in from the west later. Further spells of rain or showers are expected over the weekend, but a change to more settled conditions is still expected in time for Christmas.
It's a dull and wet start to Friday across many parts of England, Wales and Ireland with some locally rather heavy rain pushing eastwards whilst strong to gale force winds are affecting the English Channel. The rain will clear from southern counties quite readily this morning to leave drier and brighter conditions, but a band of rain will linger across parts of Northern Ireland and northern England into the afternoon before slowly fizzling out. Meanwhile, for many parts of Scotland it will be a mainly dry and bright day with just a few showers in the north and west. It will be colder here though with maximum temperatures only making a couple of degrees above freezing over inland regions. It will be milder around the coasts though and more widely temperatures today will range from 8°C to 12°C for most, mildest in the southwest despite the strong winds.
Another area of rain will then push in across Ireland and Northern Ireland later on today and this pushes east across England, Wales and southern parts of Scotland during this evening and tonight with some strong winds in the south. The rain will then clear to a mixture of clear intervals and scattered showers by morning but all this weather activity will help to hold temperatures up. The only exception will be across northern Scotland where clear skies and light winds will again allow for some frost to form. This takes us into a rather breezy and showery day on Saturday, the showers mainly affecting western regions.
