Increasingly showery conditions are set to develop across many parts of the country during the next few days with temperatures set to take a tumble as we head towards the weekend. Low pressure developing over Scandinavia and high pressure over Greenland and Iceland will help to push colder air south across Britain and Ireland by the end of the week with night frosts becoming widespread.
May is starting off on a relatively quiet note with some mist, fog and low cloud around again this morning, especially across central and eastern regions of the UK. There is also a fair amount of cloud across western regions of the UK with outbreaks of rain and drizzle affecting western parts of Scotland, Wales and England, so the best of the early sunshine is likely to be found across parts of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. That band of cloudy, damp weather will tend to push further eastwards today, the rain turning more showery in nature but there could be some heavy showers breaking out in places this afternoon. Not everywhere will see the showers though, with some areas staying dry and bright for much of the day. Top temperatures today will be in the range of 12°C to 16°C for many, but will be slightly higher in the brighter regions.
Showers will tend to die back towards coastal regions in the west tonight with some clear spells developing for many. However, more in the way of cloud with some rain and drizzle will affect parts of northern and north-eastern Scotland and this continues into tomorrow. Some rain will also come in the far west and southwest of Ireland and this will continue into tomorrow, otherwise for many areas Thursday will be a day of sunny spells and scattered showers, the showers heavy at times and perhaps bringing a rumble or two of thunder.
