Yesterday was a pretty active weather day towards the east and south of the UK as heavy rain and thunderstorms brought some localised flooding with some spots seeing over three inches of rainfall. There's more rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for the next few days as the unsettled spell continues, but there is one exception.
That exception comes across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland where there will once again be plenty of dry and bright weather around today with sunny spells. A few scattered showers will break out, but not everywhere will catch them. Meanwhile, for many parts of England and Wales it is a cloudy and windy start to Tuesday with outbreaks of rain affecting many northern and western regions, the rain locally heavy and thundery. There are some drier and brighter conditions towards the southeast this morning, but the sunshine will help to spark off some thundery showers by this afternoon, more especially across inland regions away from southern and eastern coasts. Otherwise for much of England and Wales it will be another cloudy day with further spells of rain for much of the time. Temperatures will again be subdued under the rain with a blustery north/north-easterly wind not helping matters. Maximums of 9°C or 10°C are likely along some north-eastern coasts and where it remains wet, otherwise highs of 14°C to 17°C are expected in the north and west but the southeast of England could see top values of 19°C in any prolonged sunny spells.
The rain continues to fall across Wales, northern and western parts of England tonight, perhaps edging into parts of southern Scotland and southeast Ireland later in the night. The north and west will be drier and clearer, and drier conditions will also affect south-eastern parts of England although more rain may arrive in the far southeast by dawn. This rain moves further north and west tomorrow but parts of central and eastern England, Wales and southwest England will see a drier spell with the original rain band edging north and west into parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland although the far north and west will remain mostly dry and bright.
