The deeply unsettled spell of weather continues today and indeed for the next few days as low pressure continues to dominate, sending troughs and frontal systems across many regions. These will bring showers or longer spells of rain with them, so if you're heading out to buy the Christmas tree or do the Christmas shopping this weekend then keep a brolly handy!
While it is a mainly dry start to Friday across southern and western Scotland along with parts of northern England, for many regions there is a lot of cloud around this morning with showers or longer spells of rain, these locally heavy and falling as snow over higher parts of eastern Scotland. Here it will remain dull and wet today with some persistent rainfall, but the rain will be more showery in nature elsewhere. The showers will be most frequent in areas exposed to the west/north-westerly wind with many central and eastern districts of England seeing a drier and brighter end to the day. It will be a rather chilly day with top temperatures in the range of 4°C to 7°C but the far southwest will again be milder despite the strong and gusty winds, especially across the Channel Islands.
Winds will tend to pick up tonight with fresh to strong westerlies developing in many regions, these feeding in showers from the west, the showers heaviest and most frequent around western coasts. Some clearer spells will develop across the north and east, away from the far northeast where it will remain wet, and there could be some frost in sheltered northern regions otherwise temperatures will hold up thanks to the wind and showers. The weekend is then set to start off on a showery note with blustery westerly winds blowing in plenty of heavy showers which will turn wintry over higher ground. Later tomorrow, more persistent rain and snow moves into parts of southern Ireland and the southwest of the UK and this is something that we are watching closely.
