A large, blocking area of high pressure centred to the east/southeast of Britain and Ireland today is helping to draw in mild south/south-westerly winds across most regions but, away from the northwest, it will also help keep most places dry. Not a lot of change is expected in the coming week or so with just day-to-day variations bringing some subtle differences at times.
For today a cold front will continue to lurk close to the northwest of Scotland bringing predominantly cloudy skies and outbreaks of rain and drizzle on and off for much of the day, this dull and damp weather affecting the far north of Scotland including the Northern Isles. Elsewhere, and it will be a mostly dry day with variable amounts of cloud and some bright or sunny spells developing in some places, the best chance of these probably coming across eastern parts of Scotland, northern England and north Wales. It will be a mild day, particularly towards the northeast with maximum temperatures of 12°C to 14°C in places, but more widely values will range from 8°C to 11°C although the brisk winds in the north and west will take the edge off those temperatures.
Very little change is expected tonight with outbreaks of rain and drizzle continuing across the far north and northwest, perhaps starting to sink a little further southwards during the course of the night. Otherwise, it will be a dry night with variable amounts of cloud helping to hold temperatures up, but where clearer spells develop so there is a risk of some patchy frost and fog forming. The new week then starts off on a similar note with plenty of dry weather around along with some bright or sunny intervals, but that band of rain in the far north and north-west is set to sink southwards across Scotland during the course of the day.
