An exceptionally mild air mass will be affecting many parts of Britain and Ireland during the next 18 hours as mild south-westerly winds sourced from the Azores feed up across the country. However, a cold front sweeping eastwards tonight will then introduce colder air towards the north for tomorrow when showers over the Scottish mountains will turn wintry so quite a contrast in conditions here during the next day or so.
Although it will be a bright start to Tuesday across south-eastern districts of the UK, for many areas there will be a fair amount of cloud spreading in from the west, the cloud thick enough to bring outbreaks of rain into western parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland where south/south-westerly winds are also strengthening. Outbreaks of rain will continue across many northern and western regions today, heaviest and most persistent across west-facing coasts and hills. Meanwhile, further to the south and east it will be drier with perhaps some brighter spells but generally a fair amount of cloud which could bring a little rain or drizzle in places. It will become windy for many areas with conditions becoming quite gusty by this afternoon, especially towards exposed parts of the north and west where severe gales may gust up to 70-75 MPH in places, but it will also become gusty to the lee of high ground across parts of northeast England. Despite the wind and the rain, temperatures will be rising with maximums of 12°C to 15°C expected for many regions so well above where they should be.
A band of increasingly light and patchy rain will push south-eastwards across the rest of the country tonight with clearer and colder conditions following on from the northwest. Showers will pack into the north and west, turning wintry over higher parts of Scotland as temperatures drop back, but it will remain milder in the south. Wednesday will then be a bright and breezy day for many places with showers continuing in the north and west, again wintry over higher parts. The far south and southwest will remain cloudier though with outbreaks of rain gathering towards the southwest during the afternoon period as the next system moves in.
