A complicated weather system will be tracking eastwards close to or across the south of the UK during the next 24 hours bringing showers or longer spells of rain with it along with the risk of gales through the English Channel. This feature will have cleared away by tomorrow, however, to allow a drier and brighter end to the working week for many before more wind and rain arrives in the northwest.
The system across the south today has a couple of low pressure centres. One is now tracking eastwards across England and Wales today whilst the other will be tracking eastwards through the English Channel during this afternoon and evening. Associated with these centres are outbreaks of rain, the rain this morning mainly affecting Northern Ireland and northern England where there are also some reports of snow coming in from higher regions. There are still some outbreaks of rain and drizzle affecting areas further south, but this rain will tend to pull away to the east today although it will linger across parts of northern and eastern England. Brighter conditions will then develop in places before further showery outbreaks of rain, locally heavy, move into southern counties of England and Wales during this afternoon. The best of the drier and brighter weather today will be found across much of Scotland, although one or two showers cannot be ruled out around the coasts. Despite the sunshine in the north it will be rather cold with top temperatures of 3°C to 6°C, but highs in the south will be nearer 9°C to 12°C.
Rain or showers in the south and east this evening will gradually become confined to eastern regions of the UK tonight with many areas becoming dry. As skies clear so a widespread frost will form in the north with a risk of some ice, but the south and east will remain frost free thanks to the cloud and breeze. This takes us into a mainly dry and bright end to the week for many with some sunny spells, but increasing cloud and wind will bring rain into the northwest of the UK by the afternoon.
