All change this coming weekend as we lose the high pressure area which is bringing the settled weather across many parts of the country and the jet stream fires up in the Atlantic bringing us a rather notable area of low pressure.
Bit of a strange old system this one as it actually comes in two parts, but nevertheless some heavy rain, snow, gales and severe gales in places as the main system crosses in on Sunday.
Basically, the system is what we call a complex low. The first part of the system isn't really a low pressure area at all and more of a trough, but this comes in on Saturday bringing strong winds, heavy rain and snow across higher ground of Scotland and Northern England through the course of Saturday. It's important that you remember that the main centre of the low pressure, which has been named Ciara actually comes in early Sunday morning and brings further heavy rainfall and hill snow in the North followed by strong to gale force winds and heavy rain which heads Southeast during the course of Sunday.
We're only mentioning this as you might wake up on Sunday and think "Blimey! What a fuss over nothing!" before seeing the weather deteriorate through the course of Sunday quite rapidly. We're just thinking about your washing is all...
As always with the big winter storms, some severe gales with large coastal waves in Western areas, more so thanks to the large fetch of Westerly winds which develop behind the system. That, coupled with an active cold front which heads Southeast and could develop into a squall later on Sunday afternoon with heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds across Southern and Central areas.
In short, if you have outdoor or travel plans this weekend then keep on top of the latest forecasts and data from the meteorologists and a very Happy National Weather Persons Day to all the weather folk out there who are lucky enough to work in this fantastic industry!
