Wind and rain will be the main feature of the weather across much of Britain and Ireland during the next few days as Storm Jorge dominates. We have received numerous enquiries as to the name of this storm with "Ellen" next on the UK storm list. In this instance, the Spanish meteorological service, part of the south west Europe storm naming group, named Storm Jorge yesterday and it is convention for all other national meteorological services to then use that name when referring to the system.
Many northern and eastern regions of the UK are starting off on a dry and frosty note this morning, however, cloud and wind has already increased towards the southwest with outbreaks of rain moving into many parts of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and southwest England. This rain continue to push north-eastwards today, falling as snow for a time over northern hills, with most places ending up dull and wet although the far north of Scotland should remain dry and bright. Somewhat drier conditions will move into the west and southwest later, but for parts of Wales it is likely to remain wet which will bring renewed flooding concerns. It will be turning milder from the southwest during the course of the day with temperatures reaching double figures in the southwest, but further north in the wind, rain and snow top temperatures of 2°C to 5°C will feel colder.
It remains cloudy with spells of rain in many areas this evening before another area of heavy rain moves into the west overnight but all the weather activity will help prevent temperatures from falling too far although clearer and colder conditions will follow into Ireland late in the night. That band of rain continues to push eastwards tomorrow with clearer, more showery conditions following on from the west. Winds will then strengthen from the west with gales or severe gales developing across central and southern regions by Saturday night.
