There will be something of a north-south split in the weather across Britain and Ireland today with a weakening front across southern regions fizzling out whilst the next set of Atlantic frontal systems move into the northwest bringing more persistent rain with them, these fronts sinking southwards across the rest of the country during tonight and tomorrow.
For this morning it is a bright and chilly start across much of northern Britain although showers are affecting northern and western coasts. Meanwhile, it is cloudier across much of England and Wales with outbreaks of rain and drizzle affecting parts of southwest England, Wales and the Midlands, although the far southeast of England is starting off on a bright note. That band of cloud across central and southern regions will continue to edge a little further south today but any rain and drizzle will tend to die out with the cloud breaking up in places by this afternoon to allow some sunny spells through. Where this happens it will turn very mild with temperatures into the low-mid teens. It will be cooler further north as that next area of rain sets in, initially across northern parts of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland before spreading in across much of central and southern Scotland this afternoon, the rain turning heavy over west-facing coasts and hills and preceded by snow over the mountains.
That band of rain will slowly sink south-eastwards tonight, weakening as it does so but there could still be some heavier bursts over western regions. Much of southern and south-eastern England will remain dry and mild though whilst clearer conditions follow into the north along with showers for the far north and west. Tomorrow sees cloudy, damp conditions slowly crossing southern counties of England to leave many areas drier, brighter and cooler but with further showers in the north, these wintry over higher ground.
