Yesterday was the hottest day of 2020 so far as temperatures peaked at 33.4°C at London Heathrow while for Wales and Scotland it was also the hottest day of the year with maximums of 31.4°C at Trawsgoed and 30.8°C at Prestwick respectively. For those of you who aren't a fan of the hot and humid conditions then the good news is that cooler and fresher conditions arrive by the weekend, but the bad news is that for central and eastern regions there is one more hot day to get through.
Friday is starting off warm and muggy for many regions and whilst there is plenty of sunshine around, there are some thundery showers pushing north/north-eastwards across parts of England and Wales this morning. They are hit and miss affairs with not everyone seeing them and they will move away northwards to allow some hot sunshine to develop. As temperatures reach highs of 28°C to 31°C so further scattered thunderstorms will break out across parts of England and Wales this afternoon and, again while not everywhere will catch one, where they do develop they could bring some torrential downpours, large hail and frequent lightning. Meanwhile, for the north and west it will be a day of sunny spells and scattered showers which may be heavy, but it will generally be a touch cooler in these areas.
Scattered thunderstorms will tend to become confined to the north and east tonight with drier spells developing for a time. However, further showery outbreaks of rain will be feeding in from the southwest during the course of the night and this sets the scene for tomorrow with brisk winds developing, bringing scattered showers to many regions, some of which could be heavy, but it will be feeling fresher with temperatures back closer to where they should be for this time of year.
