A rather deep area of low pressure is sitting over northwest Scotland today and will be dominating the weather in all regions, whether that's in the form of fresh and blustery winds or heavy and persistent rainfall. This low will only slowly pull away to the east during the next couple of days but pressure will remain relatively low across many regions for much of the coming week keeping the mixed theme going.
There's a lot of cloud around this morning with scattered showers continuing to feed in from the west and southwest. The heaviest, most frequent and prolonged showers are affecting parts of western Scotland, Northern Ireland, northwest England along with north Wales and in these areas it will be a pretty wet day with spells of rain for much of the time with up to two inches of rain possible, and perhaps more over higher parts of Cumbria and Lancashire. Meanwhile, the further south and east that you are the more in the way of drier and brighter spells that there will be with just the odd shower passing through. It will also be drier across the far north and northeast of Scotland with some brighter spells at times. Winds will be light across Scotland but they will be stronger further south, especially across Northern Ireland where gale force gusts are possible. It will be rather cool in the north and west with top temperatures of 14°C to 17°C, but in the brighter parts of the southeast maximums of 19°C to 21°C are expected.
Any evening showers in the south will mostly die away tonight but for northern and western regions they will continue, merging into longer spells of rain at times. It will remain breezy for many with temperatures holding up in double figures for most. Not a huge amount of change is expected as we go into the new working week but the more persistent rain in the north and west will tend to slowly ease and become more showery in nature.
