A real north-south divide in the weather during the next few days as a ridge of high pressure brings a fair amount of dry and settled weather to northern regions whilst southern parts of the country see a slack area of low pressure and associated trough bringing the risk of heavy and thundery downpours with them.
Already this morning that divide is evident with scattered thundery showers affecting southern parts of England and Wales, especially towards the southwest. For most other regions it is a dry start to the day although there is a fair amount of low cloud and mist around, especially towards eastern and north-eastern coasts. The northeast will remain rather cool and gloomy again today but skies will tend to brighten up elsewhere with the best of the sunshine to be found across western parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northwest England. Further to the south and once again we are expecting scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms break out although they will again be hit and miss affairs. Where they do occur, torrential downpours, hail, gusty winds and frequent lightning are all possible bringing the risk of localised flash flooding. Temperatures today will range from a rather cool 13°C to 16°C under leaden skies in the northeast to 21°C to 26°C elsewhere, feeling warm in the sunshine.
Showers and thunderstorms towards central and southern regions will only slowly tend to ease tonight, lingering into the early hours for some, but most other regions will remain dry with mist and low cloud feeding back in from the northeast. It will be another rather muggy night in the south but temperatures generally will drop down into the low-mid teens. The weekend doesn't see a huge amount of change with many northern regions seeing plenty of dry and fairly settled weather whilst scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms will continue to affect southern regions from time to time.
