Next Week's ProspectsAdded : Saturday at 16:48 In yesterday's discussion we mentioned the prospects for the second half of next week where some very interesting weather may be on the cards so for today's discussion we are going to take a look at what the latest model output is showing.
As you will probably have noticed, somewhat milder air is now filtering in across the country and with high pressure close to the south and southwest during the next few days so winds will continue to come in from a westerly quarter with temperatures gradually returning to near normal values:
Those weak fronts will bring a little patchy rain or drizzle at times but on the whole there will be a lot of dry if rather cloudy weather around for most places.
However, as we head towards midweek we will be watching a developing low pressure system out over the Atlantic:
This feature looks set to develop along the boundary of some very cold Arctic air coming down from the north as pressure rises in the Greenland region and the milder air to the south. Conditions look favourable for some rapid cyclogenesis to take place as this low sweeps across the country with the main global models all picking up on this. Here's the latest ECMWF:
The UKMO:
The GEM:
And the latest GFS:
Good agreement on the potential for a spell of wet and very windy weather to affect all areas with the risk of gales or severe gales and some heavy rain. However, not only that but there will be an added complication in that cold air to the north sinking south which could undercut this system and bring an increasing risk of heavy snow on the northern and back-edge:
It's too soon to firm up on these details as the track and intensity of the low will be crucial in determining the final outcome. We will continue to monitor and bring you further details as developments become clearer.
A quiet start to the week then, but the end of the week could be a rather different story!
