Turning Milder Next WeekAdded : Saturday at 12:15 Cold air across much of the north and east of the country at the present time will be giving way to milder winds from off the North Atlantic by the end of the weekend and as we go into next week so a change in the weather is on the way, most noticeable across northern Britain where it has been coldest and snowiest in the last few days.
Here is the current synoptic set-up:
Frontal systems across the south and west are bringing cloudier and slightly milder conditions with them today but also outbreaks of rain and some hill snow. Meanwhile it is drier, sunnier but colder the further north and east that you go.
As we go into Sunday those fronts to the southwest gather themselves and start to march north-eastwards bringing a band of rain with them, but ahead of these fronts that cold air will still be in place:
So as that rain meets the cold air so a period of snow is likely for parts of the north and east before milder air moves in later in the day turning the snow back to rain:
As we head into the new week a large low pressure system out over the North Atlantic will be feeding in milder south-westerly winds across much of Britain and Ireland:
With temperatures everywhere considerably milder than they have been of late:
Although it will be milder, it is still looking rather unsettled next week with freshening winds bringing outbreaks of rain or showers in from the west during Tuesday and Wednesday:
As we head into the second half of the week temperatures drop back a touch as winds veer more west/north-westerly but nothing particularly cold is indicated. It remains changeable and windy with further showers in many areas, and by Friday there are signs of a brief northerly developing bringing some wintry showers to the far north:
However, this is short-lived and there are indications from the models that high pressure may try and assert itself over or close to the UK and Ireland beyond next weekend, as illustrated by the latest GFS ► output:
The GEM and ECMWF ► models are not as keen though and keep high pressure further to the south:
This is a long way off so plenty of time for changes. In the meantime we can expect a milder few days ahead before temperatures drop back down to nearer normal values by the end of next week. It remains changeable though with further showers or longer spells of rain pushing through from time to time.
