Sunday's RainAdded : Saturday at 14:00 Make the most of the drier and brighter weather on offer today across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland because tomorrow sees a return of dull and wet weather as the next Atlantic frontal system heads in. However, if you're in Scotland, you will hold onto the brighter conditions and tomorrow will also see fewer showers.
Here is the forecast synoptic chart for Sunday lunchtime:
An elongated area of low pressure (1005mb) and its associated frontal systems are affecting southern parts of the country, but for northern regions a ridge of high pressure (1024mb) building in from the northwest keeps it brighter here.
Outbreaks of rain associated with the low are expected to arrive across south-western parts tonight:
Note these are 1 hourly rain rates showing so nothing particularly heavy is anticipated, nonetheless there will be some steady bursts of rain moving in making for a damp end to the night across much of Ireland, Wales, southern and south-western England.
During tomorrow that rain continues to drift further north and east, but doesn't make it much further north than Northern Ireland across to northern England:
This will make for a pretty dull, damp and miserable Sunday across much of the UK, but there will be one exception and this comes across Scotland. You will notice from the charts above that, apart from a few scattered showers, much of Scotland remains dry throughout this period thanks to that ridge of high pressure building in. In fact there will also be some sunshine around tomorrow:
Despite this, it will be cold with some inland regions struggling to climb above freezing. Whereas in parts of the southwest maximums will be into double figures despite the dull and overcast conditions. This front then lingers cross to the southwest for much of Christmas Eve before it drifts back north-eastwards as a weak feature on Christmas Eve night and into Christmas Day, bringing that milder air back north.
